DivX Animation Creation with Toast
The following steps will show you how to convert an animation into a high-quality, highly compressed and very portable DivX animation. The new DivX animation can be played on Windows, Linux and Mac (including PowerPoint) provided that the free DivX plugin was installed (http://www.divx.com).
-
Create an intermediate animation of your images before using Toast.
Use these commands to create a 10 frames-per-seconds uncompressed Quicktime animation which will be later converted by Toast.ssh onyx1 cd ~/my_images makemovie -o out.mov -f qt -c qt_anim -r 10 -q 1 -p 1 -k 1 `ls -c1 *.png | sort -n`
- Physically go to room 104 at GFDL and login as Guest onto the silver PowerMac G4.
-
Open a new shell with the Terminal program and ftp your machine to obtain the
animation created in Step 1. Launch the Terminal program from the dockbar as shown
below, and complete an ftp session similar to the example.
-
With your animation file now on the PowerMac workstation, launch Toast from the dockbar,
choose Toast's "Video" tab, and then "Add" your file. You'll be presented with a
File Chooser dialog, so just find your animation; the location of
our example is illustrated below.
-
Press the "Export" button to bring up the Save As dialog and button to access the DivX
parameters. Specify the output location and a file name ending with the extension .mpg
to maximize playback portability. Now make sure "DivX" is the Format selected in the list and then press the "Options" button.
-
The "Options" button will bring up a profile dialog. From there press the "Advanced Settings..."
button. This will bring up the DivX Video tab. Ensure that output resolution matches the input
as well as the Framerate (they should already be set automatically).
-
Now choose the DivX Coded tab and make sure that the "Encode Performance" is set to
"Insane Quality" and "Encode mode" is set to "2-pass". The "Average bitrate" should
be at least 1300 kbps, but can be higher such as 2000 kbps or 4000 kbps (higher kbps
values create larger output files).
- Press the "Ok" button to leave the DivX Advanced Settings. Again, click "Ok" to close the DivX Profile dialog, which will bring you back to the "Save as" dialog. Finally press the "Save" button and your animation will be encoded and placed in the location specified earlier.
