Sample Map - Animated Isosurface, Vectors (Blizzard of '93)
Description
OK, hang in there - this is even more complicated, but it has a lot of very useful stuff in it for meteorological applications! In this case, the blast of cold air behind the Blizzard of '96 is visualized using an isosurface of temperature together with wind vectors.
This map is much like the previous one ("animate_isosfc_sample_1.map"), but with several important new wrinkles:
- The source of the data is a numerical prediction model (the GFDL LAHM) employing a sigma vertical coordinate;
- A computational module, "CalcZsigma1", is used to compute the altitude, in geopotential meters, of each point in the x-y-sigma grid;
- "SigmaToZ" is used to convert the "perimter" lattices of x-y-sigma data into "curvilinear" lattices, so that each data point will be positioned correctly in x-y-z space;
- "DisplaceLat" is used to create a raised "topography" to underlie the data;
- The "VectorMaker" module is used to create a field of wind vectors, with a "SubSample" being taken to reduce the density of the vectors;
- The "AddMaterial" module is used to manipulate the color, transparency, and shininess of the isosurface.
