Notes from Aug 25, 2004

The primary goals of this meeting was for Toggweiler to give a background presentation and lead a discussion on issues relating to the initialization of the ocean carbon system.

Toggweiler's presentation can be downloaded here Essentially, the system will not come to a steady state equilibrium untial the model has been run out on the order of 10,000 years. As this integration is not possible, we look for an alternative... In the discussion which followed, it was suggested that a practical minimum criterion for equilibration of the CO2 system would be that atmospheric CO2 drift in a control run without greenhouse forcing be much less (say, 10%???) of the change in a perturbation run with greenhouse forcing. This puts our tolerance for model drift at 0.2 Pg C/yr. As fluxes drop to the 0.02 Pg C/yr level after 180 years of integration in the ocean model when initialized to a constant value, this should be a realizable goal.
