Modeling Services Projects
Memphis public release of the AM2 Model and the atmosphere dynamical cores
Responsible for the public release of the AM2 Finite-Volume (FV) Model and the
bgrid, FV and spectral atmosphere dynamical cores. Performed regression testing to ensure
reproducibility of model results across processor counts and restart files. The test
cases were tested using various compilers on the SGI Origin and Altix platforms.
Release tasks also include updating documentation, preparing source code, test cases,
input and output datasets and uploading the release package on GFDL's public server, Gforge.
Internal releases of the FMS infrastructure, LM2, LM3V and the SCM
Developed, maintained, merged and tested code for the internal
releases of the FMS infrastructure, the component land models, LM2 and LM3V, and
the Single-Column Model (SCM). Regression testing is performed to ensure reproducibility across
processor counts and restart files. Testing is also performed using
various compilers and options on the SGI Origin and Altix platforms.
Release tasks also include updating module documentation via
XML-based DocBook and Wiki pages, regression testing (RTS), porting to
Altix (ia64) and user guide development. Involved in the Galway, Havana,
Inchon, Jakarta, Khartoum, Lima and Memphis releases.
Database development and management
The FMS Model Development Database is a MySQL relational database
cataloguing information to reproduce a model experiment run. A
web-based GUI was written for simplified interaction with the database.
At this time, a production database is being developed for long term
runs.
Post-processing analysis benchmark
The FRE post-processing analysis scripts were included in the
2004 procurement at GFDL.
FMS/FRE Development
Configured the land models, LaD and SHE, to use the FMS Runtime
Environment. Presented FRE to GFDL during a workshop. Continued FRE
support to the LMDT.
Software XML documentation template (in progress)
XML-based template for software and public release documentation.
Earth Science Portal (in progress)
The Earth Science Portal is a collaboration designed to build the
infrastructure needed to create web portals to provide access to observed
and simulated data within the climate and weather communities. Work in
this area includes collaborating with the University of Reading, UK and
other institutions around the world to devise a metadata standard for
model and experiment data used in numerical modeling databases.
Parallel I/O (in progress)
Incorporate a parallel netCDF library from ANL into mpp_io.
NetCDF support (ongoing)
Conversions from various formats (ASCII, GRIB, binary, HDF4, GrADS) to
NetCDF. c-shell script development for automated conversions, metadata
editing, time-series production, interpolation, regridding, weighting,
etc.
