4.2.3.5 Vertical friction

The vertical friction $(\kappa_{m} \, {\bf u}_{h})_{z}$ parameterizes the vertical exchange of horizontal momentum due to subgrid scale processes. An eddy-viscosity hypothesis is the basis for the form of the friction. No ``metric terms'' are needed, regardless of whether the vertical viscosity is constant or spatially dependent.
