P.C.D. (Chris) Milly was recently named a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). His election to the rank of AGU Fellow will be recognized on May 26th at an Honors Ceremony in Toronto, Canada. Dr. Milly is a hydrologist who has worked at NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory since 1988, as part of a long-term collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey.
Dr. Milly joins four other current GFDL scientists who have been awarded this honor. Each year AGU selects no more than one-tenth of one percent of its membership to be named as Fellows. Election as an AGU Fellow serves as acknowledgement of the scientist’s eminence in the Earth (or space) sciences over a sustained period, with significant impact on his or her field.
During more than 20 years as a research scientist at GFDL, Chris has made unique contributions to hydrologic modeling, and to our understanding of the global water cycle and the interactions between global climate and continental water. He has had a leading role in developing the land surface model that is at the heart of GFDL’s climate models, which are consistently ranked at or near the top of the models contributed to the IPCC AR4. His own research is focused on land cover change and streamflow; he has published over 75 papers on continental water and climate.
