Ronald J. Stouffer Honored by American Geophysical Union

February 15th, 2012

stoufferThe American Geophysical Union (AGU) recently announced the election of Ronald J. Stouffer as an AGU Fellow.  This designation is conferred upon less than 1% of all AGU members in any given year, as a tribute for those who have made exceptional scientific contributions.

Stouffer is a senior research scientist and head of the Climate and Ecosystems Group at Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, where he has been since 1977.  In electing him a fellow, AGU recognized his work, “for his path-breaking development of coupled atmosphere-ocean climate models and their use in research on the oceans’ role in climate change”.

Stouffer’s research examines past and present climate using computer models.  He has authored over 100 papers on global climate change, and his recent work focuses on simulations of regional sea level change.

Stouffer was appointed a fellow of the American Meteorological Society in 2007.  He is also a contributing author of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports issued in 1995, 2001 and 2007.  He has been a member of the World Climate Research Program’s Working Group on Climate Modeling since 1993, and currently serves as the working group’s chair.  His work has been recognized with Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medal Awards from the Department of Commerce.  Stouffer holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s in meteorology from Pennsylvania State University.
