Dr. Venkatachalam “Ram” Ramaswamy was a respected scientist, leader, mentor, and colleague who made a lasting impact on GFDL and the broader climate science community. He first joined GFDL as a visiting scientist in 1985 and later served in several leadership roles, including group leader, senior scientist, Acting Director, and Director of the Lab.

Throughout his career, Ram contributed to important advances in climate science, atmospheric physics, Earth system modeling, and weather and climate prediction. He also played a key role in strengthening GFDL’s scientific reputation and supporting NOAA’s mission. His work was recognized nationally and internationally, including through his contributions to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and his election to the National Academy of Sciences.

Ram passed away on June 21, 2026. He will be remembered for his scientific contributions, leadership, mentorship, and commitment to helping others. His legacy lives on through the research he helped advance, the people he mentored, and the lasting impact he had on the scientific community.
