The Journal of Geophysical Research Atmospheres has awarded GFDL senior scientist, Paul Ginoux, its 2014 Editors’ Citation for Excellence in Refereeing. The award will be announced in an upcoming issue of Eos. The citation recognizing Dr. Ginoux “is to express publicly the gratitude of AGU to those whose reviews have been particularly commendable. Your contributions to the journals program have been invaluable in maintaining a high quality standard.”

For the past 15 years, Dr. Ginoux has been reviewing 3 to 5 papers related to aerosol studies each year, for theJournal of Geophysical Research. Most of the studies focused on dust and their effects on climate or air quality, the subject of Dr. Ginoux’s own research. Originally from Belgium, he is considered one of the world’s leading experts in his field. Dr. Ginoux has had a distinguished career at NCAR, NASA, and since 2003, GFDL.

Peer review is considered the gold standard for published research, and scientific journals rely on conscientious scientists’ willingness to volunteer their time to review submitted manuscripts. The review process is generally anonymous, so reviewers are known only to the journal. There is no public acknowledgement of their hard work unless it rises to the level of sustained excellence, such as this.
