John Dunne, supervisory research oceanographer and head of GFDL’s Earth System Processes and Interactions Division, has been named to Clarivate’s 2024 list of Highly Cited Researchers. This recognition identifies scientists whose published work over the past decade ranks among the top 1% of citations in the Web of Science, reflecting the widespread influence and impact of their research on advancing scientific knowledge.
In response to this recognition, Dr. Dunne stated, “I am deeply honored to be recognized on this list. This acknowledgment highlights the collaborative efforts of my colleagues at GFDL, whose dedication to advancing the understanding of the Earth System inspires me every day.”
Dr. Dunne is one of only five NOAA scientists included on the 2024 list and the sole representative from GFDL. His research focuses on advancing the understanding of ocean and climate systems, with applications in marine biogeochemistry, ecosystem dynamics, and coupled carbon-chemistry-climate modeling. His work aims to improve predictions and projections of climate variability and change, as well as their feedbacks and impacts on Earth Systems.
Clarivate, a global analytics company specializing in research insights and bibliometric analysis, compiles this annual list to acknowledge researchers who have demonstrated exceptional influence in their fields. The selection process combines quantitative data, such as citation metrics, with qualitative evaluation to identify scientists recognized by peers worldwide. This year’s list includes over 6,000 individuals across various disciplines.
