Marine Ecosystem and Downscaling Division

Our division has two primary goals: 1) understanding and predicting the interactions between climate and marine ecosystems, and 2) translating climate and earth system model outputs to the regional scales at which decisions are often made. We lead the development of the marine ecosystem and biogeochemical components of GFDL’s earth system model. We co-develop and apply high-resolution dynamically downscaled regional ocean/ecosystem simulations to understand the regional marine resource consequences of environmental variability and change. We evaluate and advance statistical downscaling methods to provide decision-relevant information to a broad array of climate impacts challenges on land and sea of critical relevance to NOAA’s stakeholders. Our activities across these fronts span decision-relevant timescales from months to centuries.
